Geography of Parwanoo

One of the major industrial towns of Himachal Pradesh is Parwanoo. It lies in Solan district on the border of the state. Also known as Orchard Town, the city is well known for its vast fruit farms. Strategic Location of Parwanoo

The beautiful hill station lies on the southwestern part of Solan district that chiefly comprises low denuded hills of Siwalik. It is located along the National Highway No. 22, near the border of Haryana. As a border town of Himachal Pradesh, Parwanoo serves as a natural gateway to other spectacular hill stations like Dagsha, Pinjore, Subatru and Kasauli.

Topography of Parwanoo

The topography of Parwanoo is mountainous. It consists of uneven terrain that is dissected with vertical and steep slopes. The soil is sandy loam in the valley areas and skeletal in the hilly areas.  However, the rich loamy soil is apt for cultivation of temperate fruit crops like apples.

Fauna of Parwanoo

A wide variety of fauna is found in the region. Animals like Mongoose, Jackal, Langurs and Monkeys are found in large numbers. The most common herbivorous animals seen in the dense forests are the Barking Deer, Yellow Throated Marten and the Ghoral. Apart from animals, there are abundant colorful birds found in the hills like Cheer Pheasants, Ghughi, Kolsa, Dhaula Teer and Pigeons.

Forests and Vegetation in Parwanoo

Pine Forest


Himalayan Sub Tropical Pine Forests are seen in Parwanoo. Teak, Fir, Sal and Juniper are the common trees generally found here. A wide variety of cedar and pine trees are also seen in these forests. Chir Pine is the most prominent pine tree. Other than the pine trees, shrubs that are commonly seen in the pine forests are Rubus and Berberis. Various types of lush green grasses are also found here. Some of the common varieties are Imperata Cylindrica, Themeda Anathera and Arundinella Setosa.
 

Rivers in Parwanoo

Kaushalya River is the main river that flows in Parwanoo. It passes by the dense forests along the Kaushalya Valley. The river is significant as the city gets its supply of drinking water from it. The water of the river is made pure by the water treatment plant in Kamli before being supplied to different regions of Parwanoo.

Climate in Parwanoo

The stimulating weather and pleasant climate of Parwanoo can be experienced all through the year. Summer is regarded as the peak tourist season for tourists who visit the region to escape the scorching heat of the Indian plains. The hot season begins from April and lasts till June. It is marked with warm days and cool nights. Monsoon commences in June and lasts till September. The heavy showers of rain make the place look more spectacular in the wet season. Winter or the cold season is distinct with chilliness.  Temperatures during the winters generally fall below the freezing point. Heavy woollens are much required during this season.

The ideal time to visit the city is between July and September.
